Also, advocacy groups that promote a culture of death, can often use ambiguous titles. This page cuts through the confusion and clearly defines important phrases and organizations related to assisted suicide and the dangerous push to legalize it in Illinois. Active Euthanasia Deliberate intervention to end a patient’s life, such as administering a lethal dose of medication. Advance Medical Directive A legal document through which an individual may designate a specific person to make health care decisions for them should they become incapable of making decisions, and which may declare the health care treatments they would desire should incapacitation occur. Advance medical directives vary from state to state, but can be used as a way for Catholics to ensure that end-of-life treatment decisions made on their behalf are consistent with the moral teachings of the Church. Assisted Suicide The act of intentionally helping someone else end his or her own life, usually by providing them with the means or information to do so. Autonomy The principle that individuals have the right to make their own decisions about their own lives, including medical treatment and end-of-life choices. Conscientious Objection Conscientious objection refers to the refusal to participate in specific activities or practices based on deeply held moral, ethical, or religious beliefs. Individuals who assert conscientious objection typically do so to avoid... --- Pregnancy Center Coffee Klatsch You Deserve Our Thanks and a Great Cup of Coffee! But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows" (Matthew 10:29-31). If you or someone you know is in distress, call or text the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988. What Is Suicide? Suicide is an attempt to harm oneself with the intent to end one's own life. Such an act, personal or assisted, is always a tragedy and an occasion for sorrow. While suicide is an objective wrong, only God can pass final judgment on the souls of His children. Our Catechism says, "Suicide contradicts the natural inclination of the human being to preserve and perpetuate his life" (CCC 2281). It is a very unnatural act. While in the moment of uncertainty in the wake of a suicide, as we shall see, our Catholic faith offers us the comfort of the hope for their repentance and salvation. Causes and Remedies Triggers to suicidal ideation can include depression, mental illness, physical suffering, shame, harassment, relationship troubles, a prior stay in prison, and exposure to others who have struggled with suicidal thoughts or actions. For a more extensive list of possible causes and warning signs to look for, visit the National Institute of Mental Health's FAQ page on suicide. Suicide begins as a thought. In it parents should, by their word and example, be the first preachers of the faith to their children; they should encourage them in the vocation which is proper to each of them, fostering with special care vocation to a sacred state. ” – Lumen Gentium The Home Is a Place of Prayer The home is where the children first learn about love, about people skills, and about God. A home is a church in miniature, a community serving God and one another. It’s important to live the Faith on a daily basis. It’s not something just for Sundays. Time for personal prayer and prayer with the whole family is crucial. Venerable Patrick Peyton famously said, “The family that prays together stays together. ” Prayer unites us in the act of communicating with God. Parents, by going to Mass and living prayerfully, give an example to their kids that speaks volumes. Parents Are Models of the Faith A Swiss study conducted in 1994 shows evidence that a father’s church attendance, in particular, can sway the faith of his children. If Dad attends church irregularly and Mom goes regularly, the study says, only 3% of children will go on to be regulars themselves, and 59% will be irregulars. 38% will lose their faith altogether. In a scenario where Dad is not practicing at all, 2% of children will remain regular churchgoers. 37% will go... --- Why Is Family Important? "The family is where we first learn to love. " - Pope Francis The Nuclear Family The nuclear or conjugal family (that is, the family that consists of Mom, Dad, and children) is the ordered vision God has in mind for human relationships. There are three distinct categories that members of a family can fit into: the role of mother, the role of father, and the role of offspring. Mom and Dad's love begets new life. Together, they make one family. This mirrors the life of God in the Holy Trinity: God the Father begets the Son, and these two divine Persons eternally generate the Holy Spirit, who is the Love between Father and Son. The natural, nuclear family is designed by God to be a model of love and to direct creation back to its Creator. Because there is a natural order to family life, family members tend to be healthier and happier when they share authentically in God's plan for their family. Effects of Healthy Relationships Pope Francis said it is in the family that we first learn to love. The family should be rooted in love; it should be grounded in Jesus, for He is love (see 1 John 4:8). Love brings people together. It makes us do the tough things for those we love. But when we focus on ourselves too much and on our personal desires, we can become selfish. If we do this, it displays a lack of love. Such... --- Notice: JavaScript is required for this content. "Research aimed at reducing human sterility is to be encouraged, on condition that it is placed 'at the service of the human person, of his inalienable rights, and his true and integral good according to the design and will of God'" (CCC, 2375). What Do We Do About Infertility? We've tried to get pregnant. But no success. Why can't we have kids? Isn't this what marriage is about - starting a family? What do we do now? Facing infertility or difficulties getting pregnant can feel daunting. But Christians are people of hope. God has many blessings in store for the future. We will explore how procreation is not the only purpose of marriage, how couples might ethically treat infertility, and how couples can continue to consider the vocation to parenthood. To learn more about the Catholic approach to infertility, check out the resources below. Natural Family Planning: Infertility The Cornerstone of Love The Catechism says, "The spouses' union achieves the twofold end of marriage: the good of the spouses and transmission of life" (CCC 2363). When marriage does not result in offspring, the Sacrament is still directed to the good of the spouses, which is achieved by each spouse loving the other and together doing God's Will. In one of his letters of exhortation, St. Paul writes about the three theological virtues: "So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love" (1 Corinthians 13:13). St. John Paul... --- Is Abortion Healthcare? "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope" (Jeremiah 29:11). What Is Reproductive Healthcare? An abortion is a direct and intentional killing of a human embryo or fetus in the womb of the mother. Abortion procurement often gets lumped together with other procedures that, in certain political rhetoric, are collectively referred to as "reproductive healthcare. " The term "healthcare" is misleading for two reasons. First, such a concept neglects the well-being of the unborn child. Second, as we shall see, such "healthcare" also fails to seek the true well-being of the women involved. Learn about the Dangers of Abortion Dangers of "Medication" Abortion The two-drug process for medication or chemical abortion, which is becoming increasingly popular, involves ingesting RU-486 (mifepristone) and misoprostol. Chemical abortion comes with a whole slew of potential side effects including infections, hemorrhages, failed abortions, and other complications resulting in ER visits. Ordinary side effects include the disruption of the menstrual cycle and abnormal bleeding. The chemical abortion pill-by-mail makes killing the unborn child private but, should a serious complication occur, leaves both patients cut off from medical supervision. However, if these abortion pills are taken, the effects can still be undone. We pray for a commitment by our elected officials to prioritize palliative care and support for those at risk from a physician assisted suicide: those with disabilities, who are nearing the end of life, or are struggling with a mental illness. We pray to Saint John Paul II, who showed us the value of human life through his own struggles and faith. Each day, start the novena by praying: Merciful God, we pray with thanks and gratitude for the great spiritual gift of Saint John Paul II’s apostolic life and mission. Through his heavenly intercession, we ask for the defeat of the assisted suicide bill and that the infinite worth of each human person is upheld through proper investment in palliative care. Grant also that we may grow in love for You and proclaim boldly the love of Jesus Christ to all people. Through Christ, Our Lord. Amen. Then read the reflection provided for the day (see below). Instead, our faith in Jesus Christ and the teachings of His bride the Church inform how we act in the public square, how we vote, and how we treat political opponents. In this role, the Church teaches the faithful to weigh policies against Gospel values, encourage people to speak out against injustice and promote the common good, and urge citizens to vote and participate in their community. Download --- Abortion "Listen to me, O coastlands, and give attention, you peoples from afar. The Lord called me from the womb, from the body of my mother he named my name" (Isaiah 49:1). The moment of fertilization. When Does Life Begin? In 2017, the American College of Pediatricians stated, "The predominance of human biological research confirms that human life begins at conception—fertilization. " Dr. Keith L. Moore, a professor at the University of Toronto, wrote, "Development begins at fertilization when a sperm fuses with an ovum to form a zygote; this cell is the beginning of a new human being. "In agreement with this scientific literature and out of care for the human person, the Catholic Church concludes: "Human life must be respected and protected from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person" (CCC 2270). What is an Embryo? What Happens in an Abortion? Abortion is the intentional taking of an innocent life in its mother's womb. There are several procedures that can terminate the developing baby. There are no federal limits on how late an abortion can be performed. Depending on how far along in the pregnancy the mother is, abortionists will perform different methods of abortion and removal of remains. These include suction, dismemberment and extraction, and lethal injection and induced stillbirth. Chemical abortion drugs (aka the abortion pill) ingested by a mother can effectively break down the uterus lining, cutting off... --- IVF and Reproductive Technologies "Techniques involving only the married couple (homologous artificial insemination and fertilization) are... morally unacceptable. They dissociate the sexual act from the procreative act. The act which brings the child into existence is no longer an act by which two persons give themselves to one another, but one that 'entrusts the life and identity of the embryo into the power of doctors and biologists and establishes the domination of technology over the origin and destiny of the human person. '" (CCC, 2377). What's Wrong with Assisted Reproductive Technologies? The Catholic Church opposes in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other harmful assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) because they separate the loving act of spouses from the procreative act. With IVF, the making of a child becomes a technical process in a laboratory. IVF leads to death of babies before birth and to injuries to children before and after birth. The process involves humiliating and immoral sperm production in the man. And IVF can endanger the woman’s health, placing stress on the well-being of families. The Human Cost In Vitro Fertilization Ethics Loving Couples and Children The Church, as the Body of Christ, accompanies those couples suffering from infertility. Furthermore, we embrace children born using IVF and other reproductive technologies. Our Lord Jesus says, "Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me" (Mark 9:37). These children are loved by God and are fully worthy of the respect... --- Mission Statement:The LiFE Office witnesses to God’s gifts of human life and relationship. Vision: The U. S. It is morally unacceptable. Thus an act or omission which, of itself or by intention, causes death in order to eliminate suffering constitutes a murder gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and to the respect due to the living God, his Creator. The error of judgment into which one can fall in good faith does not change the nature of this murderous act, which must always be forbidden and excluded. Natural Family Planning (NFP) is the scientific, natural, and moral approach to family planning that helps couples achieve or postpone pregnancy by understanding and tracking their joint fertility. NFP fosters self-knowledge, respect, and appreciation for the gift of fertility. Each method of NFP helps a couple identify times of fertility with scientific precision by observing the presence or absence of various signs of fertility. No drugs, devices, or surgical procedures are used to avoid pregnancy. NFP supports God’s design for married love by fostering free, total, faithful, and fruitful communion between husband and wife. Who can use it? NFP is a helpful tool for all women in all phases of life to better understand a woman’s reproductive health. Women who are single, married, breastfeeding, or approaching menopause can benefit from the knowledge that is gained through learning to listen to one’s own body. Any married couple can use NFP. A woman need not have “regular” cycles. NFP education helps couples fully understand and interpret their combined fertility so that they can discern when to postpone or try to attempt pregnancy. The key to the successful use of NFP is cooperation and communication between husband and wife – a shared commitment. How do I learn NFP? The best and most effective way to learn NFP is to receive instruction with a qualified teacher who has been trained and certified to teach a particular method. These individuals... --- Marriage Preparation build a foundation to withstand each season of life Congratulations! Congratulations on your upcoming marriage in the Catholic Church. These pro-life centers form relationships with couples and individual parents who have an unplanned pregnancy. Many offer financial and material support, family and parenting education, post-abortion counseling, prayer, and spiritual support. Nevertheless, a mainstream narrative exists in our culture that tries to hinder these facilities that cater to moms and growing families.
